You can see an in depth (but accessible) description of the SAVE act here, and below is a brief breakdown of its danger and consequences.
But first, lets discuss what you can do to fight this horrifying and alarming attempt to disqualify millions of citizens from voting.
The house is voted to pass this on April 10th. To pass the senate, they need 60 votes. Call your senators. Remind them that they need us to vote them back in.
First, Call your Senators.
Seriously, call them. They need to be reminded that they are beholden to their constituents.
Use this link for 5calls, it gives you a script and the phone numbers to call.
If it goes to voicemail, please be sure to leave your name and address so whatever staffer is taking down the information can properly add you.
Second, Write to your Senators, in addition to (not in place of) calling them.
If you want to email outside of the above (please do), here is a script (feel free to customize):
Subject: Vote NO on the SAVE Act (H.R. 8281)
Dear [Representative/Senator] [Last Name],
I’m writing as your constituent to urge you to vote NO on the SAVE Act (H.R. 8281). While I strongly support secure elections, this bill would disenfranchise millions of eligible American voters—particularly women, low-income individuals, trans people, and older citizens—who may not have access to a current passport or the ability to quickly obtain one.
Many Americans, especially women who have changed their names due to marriage, face bureaucratic hurdles in obtaining documents that perfectly match their current legal identity. This legislation would place an undue burden on lawful voters and risks suppressing participation in our democracy.
As your constituent, I want to remind you that your position is a direct result of our votes and trust. Your duty is to represent our interests and uphold the democratic values that ensure every eligible citizen has unimpeded access to vote. Supporting legislation that potentially disenfranchises voters undermines this trust and could influence our future support.
Sincerely,
[Your Full Name]
[Your Address or Zip Code]
[Optional: Your Phone Number or Email]
Thirdly, Sign This Petition
Sign this petition on Resistbot to say no the SAVE act on.
But please don’t do this instead of calling. Do it in addition to calling.
Lastly, Spread the Word
Tell your family and friends.
Knowledge is power, but doing something is more powerful.
Spread this site or other ones around. Those in power need the hear our voices and listen to us if they want to be re-elected.
Assert your power.
What Is The SAVE Act?
If the Safeguard American Voter Eligibility (SAVE) Act passes, it would require that all people registering to vote to have proof of citizenship that matches their legal name.
Includes
- Birth Certificate
- Passport
Does Not Include
- Driver licenses
- Military IDs
- Tribal IDs
Consequences
Women
- Over 80% of women in opposite-sex marriages change their last name. So they cannot use a birth certificate.
- About 69 million women do not have a birth certificate that matches their name.
- And an estimated 146 million American citizens do not possess a passport. If we assume half are women, then 73 million women do not have one.
Americans In General
- 79% of Americans that make less than $50,000 do not have a passport.
- 63% of Americans overall don’t have a passport.
- 10% of Americans do not have or do not easily have access to a passport or a birth certificate
Trans People
- Approximately 2/3 of trans people have changed their birth name. This would affect about 1.4 million.
Impact
It costs $160 to get a passport. This is inaccessible for many.
No one should have to pay to exercise their constitutional right and civic duty. (Potentially violating the 24th amendment.)
